"Some Albertans worry that creating a new Provincial Senate would make government slower, more divided, or too much like Washington, D.C.. But an Alberta Senate that is modeled on Canada’s parliamentary rules, would function very differently from the U.S. Congress. In our Westminster-style system, the executive, that is the Cabinet, is drawn from, and accountable to, the lower house, and is not a separate branch of government. The Senate would not hold equal legislative power with the Assembly, nor could it paralyze the government. Instead, its role would be to provide sober second thought: a place for review, revision, and reflection before new laws take effect."
